3rd XI v US COMBRONDE 27th MARCH 2010

This is something of a life-and-death struggle for Pionsat who are playing tonight against one of the pace-setters in the division. But clearly my haranguing of the club over the lack of support for the 3rd XI is having some effect as Gregory, unavailable for the 1st XI tomorrow, is out on the pitch warming up. All is not lost.

Well - almost. Because like everyone else on the pitch and in the stadium I missed the 1st goal. It was a cross into the box from the edge of the penalty area, looking rather harmless like many of them do, when it took an absolutely wicked deflection and left the entire defence stranded as it swerved into the net.

What can you do about things like this?

But much to my surprise, and probably to the surprise of many others too, Pionsat equalise.

Pionsat's little no10 who has impressed me in a few matches this season won the ball well in the centre of the field and played the ball out wide to the left wing where Gregory was lurking. His first-time cross was a high ball into the area and the even smaller no11 outjumps the entire Combronde defence to head the ball smartly home.

"His first goal for the club" beamed Bernard the President. Well, he won't score any better goal than that one. It really was excellent.

And it gets even better. Pionsat's right-back, who has had some indifferent games of late (and so have may others too so he needn't feel singled out), shows some devilish persistence and eventually wins a good ball. He plays it into space down the wing.

The winger does well to get to the ball and puts in a good cross that finds Gergory. He beats a couple of defenders and the keeper and finds the back of the net.

Pionsat are in front, and what would have been the odds on that at before the kick-off?.

Pionsat are still going forward and there's a lovely breakaway down the wing and into the centre of the field. The no11 picks up the loose ball and heads towards goal.

The keeper comes rushing miles out of his goal to see what's what and I don't know why they never learn, and the no11 sees his chance and drives the ball from 35 yards right past him. Luckily for him the keeper just about manages to get something onto it and diverts it out for a corner. If he had got nothing onto that Pionsat would have been home and dry.

Before long Combonde equalise - against the run of play it has to be said. It stems from a good move down the right wing and a cross into the centre which found an absence of central defence and so the unmarked forward has an easy task.

It has to be said that considering my criticism of the Pionsat 3rd XI's central defence over tha last 18 months they have tightened up considerably at the back and are playing so much better these days. This kind of thing would have been a regular occurrence a while back. There was a spell last season when it seemed that for every match Pionsat had Lord Lucan and Martin Bormann playing in the centre of defence.

Late in the game Combronde score a third goal, which I didn't photograph because once more the entire defence, supporters, officials and yours truly were thoroughly deceived by another wicked deflection from a Combronde shot. It was a shot through a ruck of players and Damien, having it covered, dived for it. However, from subsequent enquiry, it seems that one of Damien's team-mates instinctively stuck out a foot and diverted it into his own net.

What a shame for Pionsat. When your luck is out it is well-and-truly out but they can take heart from this defeat because they really did put up a spirited fight against a much better team. Of course you can't say that this is a good omen for the future as they will probably be brought back down to earth with a crash sooner or later but what with this narrow defeat and the draw the other week against Thuret where they kept their concentration for the entire 90 minutes they are looking much more solid than they did at one time.

The icing on the cake is that the team just above them, Marcillat, were heavily trounced and so Pionsat have gone up to third bottom on goal difference.
