2nd XI v BEAUREGARD VENDON 30 NOVEMBER 2008

Luckily, the overnight snow didn't linger. Instead, we had biting galeforce winds. Football today was likely to be a lottery. And I'm never very good at lotteries.

It was apparent from the kickoff that there was a gulf of class between these two teams. And for yet another pleasant change, Pionsat seemed to have the upper hand today too, just like the first team did last night.

Pionsat kicked off right into the teeth of the howling gale and were soon on the attack. It didn't take long for them to win a corner, and from there we had the first goal - whacked in through a ruck of players and giving the keeper little chance.

I'm not sure why the image has come out blurred like this though.

And if you notice the no7 in the picture - that's the lad who played at right-back in the cup match against Chatelguyon back in September, and who impressed me so much. I haven't seen him since, but with him in the side as well as the no9 and no11 who impressed me at Loubeyrat last week and the no10 who impressed me at Teilhet a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering if my luck was going to be in.

Pionsat's secong goal came from a free kick. Bernard, the club president and who was refereeing today (note the sartorial elegance that he is displaying.) places the ball and conscienciously marches the defensive wall back the required 9 metres, and from the resultant kick, the ball goes straight in.

You can see the snow on the Font Nanaud in the background. That is north-facing so it has a tendency to linger up there, but you can see what the weather has been like. That's approximately 730 metres of altitude up there.

Early in the second half, Pionsat go 3-0 up, from a penalty. A nice movement through the middle saw the Pionsat forward clear on goal but he was scythed down by about 3 or 4 Beauregard players.

They spent about 5 minutes arguing that it wasn't a foul, but when it was clear that Bernard wasn't going to change his mind they then argued that it was outside the area. A waste of time if you ask me, unless the purpose is to unsettle and intimidate him for later.

Anyway, we finally get the penalty, and it's a simple goal.

This was a beautiful ball from Pionsat and merited a fourth goal. Some good movement down the right wing and a beautiful cross into the area. The Pionsat forwards might be small but they are nippy and the no9 beats the offside trap to meet the cross perfectly with a free header.

But with all of the goal gaping, he puts it too close to the Beauregard keeper. He is equal to it, however, and manages to keep it out. That was a real shame. It was worth a goal.

What was also a real shame was that I missed the fourth goal. A hopeful ball walloped upfield that grubbed along the surface into the area. The keeper's body language implied that it was going wide so I didn't bother (it was cold so I had my hands in my pockets) and the ball crept into the net, with everyone (the keeper and yours truly included) just standing around watching it.

This was a delightful goal too. A nice cross from the left wing found the Pionsat no9 on the edge of the penalty area. Although the ball went behind him, he brought it under control, flicked it over his right shoulder and collected it nicely.

He shrugged off a couple of tough challenges, made some space for himself and slotted it firmly home with the keeper well-beaten.

There was some nice skill in this match despite the biting, howling gale and I was enjoying myself this afternoon.

And it gets even better from here. Another delightful ball into the area which was well-collected by the Pionsat attack. A couple of Beauregard defenders try to put in some tackles but they are what I would call "tired tackles" - the defence seems to be out of it by this time.

The keeper comes out to narrow the angle but it's one of those rare days when everything is going right for Pionsat. The keeper is in no-man's land (or no-person's land if you are Turdy de Hatred) and it draws a beautiful lob from the Pionsat attacker. It was worth the admission just to see that. 6-0, despite the best efforts of a Beauregard defender.

And yet another blurred image. I dunno what's happening here.

I said that it was one of those days that everything was going right for Pionsat. Well, almost everything. For Beauregard unexpectedly pull one back.

With the Pionsat team well-upfield, there's a break down the right and the little right winger is clear. He beats one tackle and pulls the entire Pionsat defence (or that part of it that isn't upfield) out of position, and then crosses into the empty centre-field.

And just for once, there's another attacker up with play who has acres of space to blast home for a late consolation.

Pionsat's keeper is obviously a keen reader of these pages, for he turned up in a nice, bright if not garish shirt. Just the job to stand out and intimidate the opposition. Trouble was, though, that it was yellowish-goldish, and you'd be surprised at the number of teams around here who have chosen yellow as their colours, just like Beauregard Verdon. He was obliged to change, and the best he could do was a blue-red top - an imitation PSG or Marseille top, I think.

And what a weekend. 4-0 yesterday and 6-1 today. It's not every weekend that that kind of thing happens to me.
