ST AVIT v 3rd XI 09 NOVEMBER 2008

This was a pretty appalling match and after driving 30 miles there and back to watch it, I was in a poor humour by the time I was back at home. It's a long time since I've seen a couple of teams use such bad behaviour and I felt sorry for the ref who had to cope with a difficult, bad-tempered match without any real support from anyone either on the pitch or on the touchline.

At this level of football where the referee is not anyone official, but merely someone with some kind of goodwill and interest in the game, I don't suppose that there is any kind of sanction (bookings, sendings-off) that he can impose in order to keep control of the game. That's the only reason I can think of as to why both teams managed to finish the game with 11 players.

There were several players on duty for Pionsat who I hadn't seen before - which made me wonder whether some of the second team, whose match was postponed last night, were being given a run out.

That thought didn't linger long in my head, because the Pionsat team didn't really involve itself in too much attacking. Early in the game, they managed a shot on goal that made the keeper work for his living, but that was about the only one that I can recall.

St Avit didn't have all that many either, but they were the ones that made it count.

In goal was the young lad who had kept goal for the first half of the match against Montel Villosanges and then who had proceeded to run the defence ragged in the second half. He was not asked to do too much in this game and coped fine with most of it, but he was no match for this shot.

Nevertheless, it would have been really interesting to see what would have happened to the game if they had played with another keeper and put him up front in the attack.

And that was really all of the action that was worth recording. Apart from the pushing, shoving, kicking, niggling, arguing and the like. And not to mention the blatant play-acting and drama-queening that had even the referee totally fed up with it all. This really was football at its worst this afternoon, and several of the players should look back on their performance in this game with something akin to embarrassment. Football doesn't need this kind of stuff.
