3RD XI v MONTEL VILLOSANGES 27 SEPTEMBER 2008

At the Chatelguyon match, they told me that there was another match the following Saturday evening, so George and I (and Liz, who came later) wandered around for a look. It was in fact a third team game, so we didn't expect too much. But what the heck! It was better than being at home.

It was a 3-1 win for Pionsat, but saying that the match was weird was something of an understatement. To start with, Pionsat began with a young lad in goal. Tall but thin - I've seen more fat on a chip - he could throw the ball easily into the opposite half and could kick almost the length of the field, yet his response to almost any shot on target was to kick it away. He could catch the ball with little problem if he wasn't under any pressure at all, but he just wouldn't catch it if there was any opposition anywhere in sight.

In the second half, there was a new goalkeeper, an older man with a limp who had to have a defender take the goal kicks. The previous goalkeeper went up front in the attack and ran Montel's defence ragged, scoring the third goal.

Now that was weird enough, but there were several players on the field who had clearly left their youth a long way behind. Pionsat's no11, big and slow and who was probably well in his 50s, scored the team's opening goal - a good run through the defence and a cool finish wide of the keeper - and was immediately substituted.

Quite a few elderly players turned in good performances, but pride of place must go to Montel's no8 who played about 70 minutes of the match in the "hole" behind the front two and prompted much of Montel's attacking play, and he was 75! He's the oldest player registered with the French FA and has featured on TV. And strangely enough, I had no doubt that his place in the team was on merit.
