1st XI v JS ST PRIEST
20th October 2012
Having watched the 2nd XI break their duck against hated local rivals The Goatslayers just now, it's time to see in the 1st XI can deal with another bunch of hated local rivals in a similar fashion. It's something of a must-win match for the home side as things haven't been going our way so far this season.
Francois is in goal tonight of course. The defence is Gaetan, Julien, Sébastien and Frederic, with Pierre, Nico, Vianney and Matthieu in midfield and Cedric up front with Christophe. On the bench are the other Julien and William.
Well, well, well. They score the first goal with a ball that was lost by Pionsat right up front in an attacking position. The ball was run back upfield all the way through the middle by one of their players, who shrugs off a couple of tackles and beats Francois into the net.
This isn't at all a good way to start the match. The Pionsat players have a mountain to climb now if they are going to win something from this game.
Five minutes later they score a second, and this is really what I would call an astonishing goal. From a free kick on the left-hand side of the Pionsat penalty area, the ball is played wide across the the right-hand angle where one of the St Priest players is waiting, and he hooks it right into the goal where I reckon that it takes a deflection off a Pionsat defender.
That's something of a tragedy because this kind of shot can go anywhere and as we've seen in the last few matches, when your luck is out, it's really out and they've all been finding the back of the Pionsat net just recently. Nothing that any keeper could have done about that.
Nevertheless, Pionsat pull one back at the psychological moment just before half-time.
It's another free kick, from about 40 yards out and played right into the centre of the area. One of the forwards reaches the ball, lays it off to the far post where a team-mate, running into position, sidefoots it into the net. Shame that I couldn't pick out who they were.
That should bring a little spark back to the team as they trudge off for their half-time bovril or whatever it is that they drink at half time round here.
With the second half about 20 minutes old there's something of an exciting incident over on the far side. One of the Pionsat players believes that he's been fouled and complains bitterly to the referee who completely ignores him. The enraged Pionsat player thus races after the St Priest player who has the ball and, with what might be described by some as a "tenacious tackle", wins the ball back.
He roars back upfield with the ball, shrugging aside all efforts to stop him, and then crosses into the centre.
The keeper misses the cross completely and the ball falls nicely to one of the Pionsat forwards totally unmarked in front of goal and he throws everything that he possesses into that, but somehow misses the ball completely. I've no idea what happened there and I bet that he hasn't either. It's a case of being far too eager I reckon.
St Priest go back onto the attack and threaten the right side of Pionsat's defence. One of their forwards dribbles his way through a whole series of challenges to go down to the by-line where he crosses right across the goal, with all of the Pionsat defenders out of possession.
One of their players is standing all on his own right by the far post with the goal at his mercy, and having seen Pionsat's effort at "miss of the season" just a few minutes ago, decides to go one better and puts the ball into the bushes about three yards wide of goal.
Totally astonishing.
With time drawing to a close, Pionsat push forward looking for the equaliser, and they come very close just here.
It's another long ball over the top and one of the Pionsat forwards chases after it. He has a shot on the run and the keeper just about manages to turn it away from the goal. Another Pionsat player, following in, reaches the ball first and lifts it over the prostrate keeper but it just passes wide of the post.
Hmmm. I'm beginning not to like the look of this. I remember saying at the start of the season that Pionsat wouldn't find it quite so easy this year, and events are beginning to prove me right. 60 clubs there were at this level last season but with the reorganisations in the close season there are now just 40 and so what was a mid-table performance last year is now a relegation candidate.
Pionsat badly needed some points from this match to keep their heads out of the water but they are now finding themselves being sucked into the basement and it's not going to be easy to climb out. One look at the stats tells you everything - defence not concentrating and the attack not firing. And I'm not sure where the goals are going to come from either
