ST MAURICE-BIOLLET v 3RD XI
6th NOVEMBER 2011
On my way out to Malauzat to watch the 1st XI, I stop by at St Maurice to watch the 1st half of the 3rd XI match that kicked off at 13:00.
Still no goalkeeper though, which is a shame (are there any goalkeepers out there reading this who fancy a game of football sometime?) but a full complement of 14 players, and some useful ones out there as well. This could be quite a match and I'm almost sorry that I have to leave at half-time.
After 20 minutes or so it's a nicely-poised match here although Pionsat have slightly the edge I reckon. And with Stéphane up front, who looks dangerous at this level if only he can get the ball and hang on, they look quite threatening.
Pionsat win a throw-in that is played to the n°6 and he works hard in midfield to get the ball out to him,but Stéphane's shot is just wide of the post.
It's Roman's turn this time to work his way down the right wing and he rides a few tackles to bring the ball into a little space.
He plays the ball inside and again it's Stéphane in the centre-forward position who is first to the cross and he has another go for goal, but this time his shot goes over the bar.
Never mind - the next one will be on target.
And it's coming, and it had to come, but it's not Stéphane's shot that's on target because Xavier does it again!
Didier does some good work down the left flank and holds up the ball really well until some other players come up to help out. He finally releases the ball to Xavier who lets loose one of his screamers right through the keeper's hands into the net. And if there hadn't been a net there, that ball would have gone all the way to Guéret without stopping.
Now I don't know who is more surprised here - the keeper, the crowd, the players or Xavier. But I wasn't. Look how early I pressed the shutter. Something inside me knew instinctively exactly where that ball was going.
A couple of things though - Pionsat lost this game 2-1, so I was informed later. And the 2nd XI played last night with a useful goalkeeper in an outfield position. Perhaps it's just me, I dunno, but no matter how well a team is playing, you can't expect them to win if you can't spare them a keeper when there is one available. Outfield players can only do so much when they have to play in goal, and a little co-operation and goodwill are needed.
Secondly, I've been silently critical of the choice of a certain player in the 2nd XI who in my opinion is not up to the standard that is required in the couple of matches that I've seen him. He's on the field here today for the 3rd XI, playing in a different position which has always been a problem area for the 3rd XI and where different skills are required. He is having an extremely good match there today, and looks right at home in that position. It's only fair that I note it.
