ES ST ANGEL v 3rd XI
9th OCTOBER 2011

I'm not having a very good weekend so far. Due to the inclement weather conditions and the bad roads I'm two minutes late for the start of this match as well. It's turning into something of a habit after last night

I find to my delight that the 3rd XI has a full complement of 11 players out there on the field, and doesn't that make a change? No substitutes unfortunately, and one of the outfield players in goal again, but I don't suppose you can have everything.

There are a couple of players out there who played for the 2nd XI last season, I notice, and the team seems to have a nice shape about it as well. If only all of this could happen every week.

And Pionsat take the lead early in the game after quite a bit of huffing and puffing about in the St Angel half. There's a really good bit of play in the midfield, and an excellent ball up to the forward line comes to Xavier. Xavier has played up front for as long as I have been watching the side and what he lacks in skill (and this is not a criticism because it applies to most of the 3rd XI who freely admit that they play for fun and entertainment rather than for ambition, and chapeau to them for doing it) he makes up for with the occasional flash of brilliance.

On this particular occasion Xavier sticks his foot out to where his foot ought to be and makes a good solid connection with the ball. The ball loops up over the keeper and right back down into the net - a good striker's opportunist goal.

I've lost count now of the times over the last three or four seasons where Xavier has pulled a goal out of nothing at all in a most unexpected moment. And he deserves it too for all the effort that he has put in on the other occasions when he has ploughed a pretty lonely furrow up front.

The Pionsat players are on the attack again and they win a free kick down on the left wing.

The ball was played forward extremely well right into to the centre of the attack and is headed onwards into the path of one of the Pionsat players. He plays it right back into the centre of the goalmouth but the Pionsat's n°9, who is desperately trying to get to the ball, is crowded out by a resolute St Angel defence.

We follow that with a beautiful break down the right wing with some really good play from a battling midfield. Roman gets the ball clear for Pionsat and centres a good cross for Xavier at the far post.

Xavier gets into a tussle with the keeper and manages to get his head to the ball, but it just scrapes past the upright ... the wrong side unfortunately. That was such a really good move by Pionsat and all of the team played well there.

Again it's all Pionsat going forward at the moment. They are on the attack again and its a long ball out of defence that everyone chases. The Pionsat n°9 who I have seen play a few times and who looks an excellent player at this level if he could work on his fitness (although he's much-improved since I first noticed him at the club) gets after that ball and has a go on his own and was close to squeezing it past the keeper.

And look at the excellent positioning of the Pionsat attackers. Lots of movement off the ball and strikers where they ought to be.

Now Roman, the Pionsat n°7, is having an outstanding game down the right side of the field and he's just beaten a couple of their defenders again, right in front of where I'm standing.

Roman puts an excellent cross into the penalty area and there's yet another good header from one of the forwards - it might have been Xavier but I'm not too sure about that and my apologies to whoever if it wasn't - but the ball sails right into the keeper's hands.

Pionsat are doing really well here and I hope that they keep it up.

And they go and do it again a short while later. This time it's Didier who puts in some good work down the right wing and he hoists the ball long into the penalty area.

The n°9 (whose name I am going to have to find out because if he plays like this he'll be one of the first names on my team sheet in this side) gets to the ball first but his shot goes right over the bar. I wonder if he might think that he might have done better with that, given the time and space that he had.

And so that was the first half, and you might have noticed that there is not a single shot of St Angel threatening the Pionsat goal. That really is a fair reflection of what happened while I was here watching the match.

I have to be on my way though to Royat to watch the 1st XI in action . Royat is a new team to Pionsat and I've never been to their ground before. As well as that, it seems that I have been appointed official photographer to the team and I have been instructed to send my best images off to the local newspaper, with official permission.

As an aside, Pionsat won 3-0 with further goals scored by Stéphane Boffa, who is the n°9 by the way, as I found out later thanks for the mail, Stéphane and Didier. I'm sorry that I had to leave now.
