2nd XI v SAYAT ARGNAT - 25th APRIL 2010
Having just witnessed a massacre down at Chatelguyon I returned to Pionsat in time to watch the closing stages of the first half of the 2nd XI's game against Sayat Argnat. This should have been played last night but Sayat didn't want to travel - maybe they have problems going home in the dark.
5 minutes to go, there was, and the score was 1-1. Apparently I'd missed a super free kick, but they didn't tell me for whom.
Nothing much happened for the remainder of the first half so we all trooped off to the pie hut with the score stll at 1-1
And to tell the truth nothing much happened in the second half either, but Sayat went in front in somewhat controversial circumstances.
The ball and the arm of a Pionsat player come into contact just inside the Pionsat penalty area. It looked totally involuntary from where I was standing and there was no Sayat player within a couple of metres so there clearly wasn't any case of "denying an opponent an advantage" or whatever the term is these days. Not even any of the Sayat players had made an appeal.
Still, the referee is the man with the whistle and he blows for a penalty. The Sayat player sends François the wrong way with the kick and they go in front.
And Pionsat's equaliser was just as controversial. Little Matthieu who normally plays in defence is playing up front on his own in this match and he's not doing too badly at it. He perseveres his way into the penalty area with a couple of defenders in close attendance and as he tries a shot there's a collision between him and the keeper who has bravely dived at his feet to block the ball.
With the keeper down, the ball bounces free and Didier running in behind for the loose ball (you can see that some people at least are avid readers of my notes) lifts it up and over everyone. A despairing flap at the ball from a Sayat player (which would have earned him a red card had he touched it) was to no avail. Didier doesn't score many goals and he is delighted with that as you can tell.
Sayat are upset about play continuing while the keeper is down but that's rather a case of "clutching at straws". The ref has an obligation to check with an injured player and to ask him if he needs assistance but in this case the action was so quick that the ref hadn't even caught up with play.
And in any case, once the goal had been awarded and the referee wasn't going to change his mind, the keeper got up quickly enough.
So two draws and a heavy defeat this weekend for the teams. That's not good enough. We'll have to do better than this next season.
