1st XI v CEBAZAT SPORTS 24th APRIL 2010

The match at Cebazat earlier in the season was played in beautiful weather - nice bright sunshine. And here we are again, also with nice bright sunshine for a Saturday evening. Mind you, this is a rearranged match. The weather was far too hostile in February when this match should have been played.

Right now, the sun that has been shining on the Combrailles relentlessly for over a week is slowly sinking below the horizon (I ought to get an award for this prose, you know) as we kick off the match.

Now I know that the Cebazat goalkeeper has seen my reports and read my comments on the earlier game because he wrote to me and told me, but I was surprised by how far he must have read into my web pages. One of my big gripes is keepers messing about with the ball instead of getting rid of it and early in the game the Cebazat keeper came running out of his area to the left-hand touchline, probably not five yards from touch, after a loose ball. And instead of messing around with it or trying to find a colleague, with him so far out of position, he whalloped the ball out of the stadium and half-way up the road to Marcillat.

Christophe had to call a taxi to chase after it, so far had it travelled.

And we had a few more during the game as well, although I suspect that one or two of these were more of the "anything you can do I can do better" variety. But this is exactly what a keeper should be doing when he finds himself out of position - whallop the ball out of the ground to give himself time to get back to his goal.

But on the subject of keepers out of position I noticed that Matthieu the Pionsat keeper was taking the free kicks tonight inside his own half, pushing the defenders forward. And once he had taken the kicks he was leisurely ambling backwards towards his goal. I'm not sure how sound a tactic this might be. It just takes one interception from a positionally-aware midfielder and then a long lob over Matthieu's head.

Pionsat concede a corner away on the far side of the field and Cebazat quickly take the kick - a high one right into the box. A Cebazat forward rises unopposed and gets a really good header on the ball.

His bullet header (for indeed that was what it was) from about 8 yards out had "goal" written all over it but Matthieu dived across his goal almost full-length and got a hand to it. He managed to claw it out from underneath the post and it was just as well that he did.

And that was all the exciting football. The remaining 89 minutes was a hard midfield slog played between the two penalty areas with nothing at all to get excited about.

Apart from that save from the corner Matthieu had really nothing else to do (and that was probably why he was taking the free kicks - to keep himsef awake) and the Cebazat keeper had two saves to make, neither of which caused him any real inconvenience. Still, it was a pleasant way to pass a Saturday evening in some warm weather.
