2nd XI v US PONTAUMUR 17th APRIL 2010
Pontaumur is pretty much the bogey team of Pionsat and Pionsat always seems to be on the wrong end of a spannering whenever these two sides meet. 7-2 when the 3rd XI played Pontaumur's 2nd XI last season, 8-1 when the 2nd XI played the Pontaumur 1st XI at the start of this season and 5-0 when the 1st XI played them in a Cup Match a couple of months ago. So we were looking for something of a dramatic reversal of fortunes in this game. Fingers crossed!
And Pontaumur score the opening goal - and it's a long time coming. We are probably about three-quarters of our way into the first half. Ironically it stemmed from a good Pionsat break which Pontaumur intercepted and then went off on a break of their own.
Pontaumur had two attackers down the inside right position who drew the defence over and when the defence was out of position the ball was played inside to an unmarked player in the centre who tapped into the net.
The Pionsat players were caught thoroughly flatfooted and this was something a shame. Up to now it's been a pretty even match without any team getting on top - quite a contrast from the two runaway victories earlier in the season.
Pionsat came very close to equalising five minutes into the second half. They broke down the right wing and some good skills from Thomas held up the ball. He passed inside and the Pionsat forward, noticing that the keeper was off his line, lifted the ball over the keeper but over the bar.
The referee, seeing the linesman's flag raised, blew his whistle and was immediately surrounded by a pile of outraged Pionsat attackers complaining that they were never offside. And so the referee informs them calmly that he has in fact blown for a foul in their favour.
Pontaumur score a second a few minutes later, whih I wasn't quick enough to catch at the correct moment. A free kick into the penalty area from the left wing was going nowhere and Philippe dived to make the easy save.
But a Pontaumur forward stretched out a foot at the last moment and just about got to the ball, deviating its trajectory and leaving Philippe clutching at empty air. And all of this after a really good spell of Pionsat play. There's no way they should be 2-0 down.
And Pionsat are still coming forward as they have been doing for much of the match and there is some fierce, if not desperate defending by Pontaumur all around the edge of their penalty area. The ball finds the Pionsat no10 in half an inch of space and he manages an over head "bicycle kick", makes good contact with the ball. It looks an almost certain goal but it hits the woodwork and cannons back into play with the keeper well beaten.
This was a real shame as this certainly deserved a goal, as do Pionsat who have been working really hard in this game up to now.
Up at the other end Pontaumur score a third goal, which happened as I was being interrupted by the club secretary over an "official matter". It was a free kick just outside the area that somehow threaded its way right through the defence, right through the penalty area and underneath the diving Philippe.
Pionsat pull one back later in the game, and well-deserved this was too even if it is a little too late. They win a corner and the ball comes high into the area. One of the central defenders rises to the ball and gets a really powerful header on the ball and knocks it well out of the area.
But it's only as far as the Pionsat no6 who drives it right back in through the crowded penalty area and into the bottom corner of the net.
And just a couple of minutes later we have almost a carbon copy of that goal.
It's another corner from Pionsat and the ball in is cleared out by the keeper. But again only as far as a Pionsat player who drives the shot right back into the area. This time the keeper goes full length and gets to the ball, pushing it clear, with no Pionsat player quick enough to get to the loose ball.
Well, not quite a spannering but still an uncomfortable defeat. Frankly Pionsat didn't deserve to lose 3-1 but I've noticed these last few matches that they haven't been really doing much up front. They aren't ever going to score if they can't get the ball into the area and put some pressure on the opposition defenders. Even a simple kick-out by the keeper can be a crisis if there are a couple of opponents beaming down on him.
