1st XI v AS ARTONNE 20th MARCH 2010
Keen followers of these pages will recall the "away" match against this opposition back in November which was bad-tempered and unsportsmanlike and which attracted the attention of others than me .
And added to this seething cauldron of hatred is the referee who had the most astonishing performance against the Miners back in September. This could be an exciting game.
Pionsat did good work down the wing and the wide man put a good cross into the centre. Cedric (I think it was him) won the ball in the air and looped it up over the keeper who had come into no-man's land (or no-person's land to readers from the Open University Students' Association), I'm not quite sure why and it's one of my eternal gripes as you know about keepers wandering out of position.
Cedric's header hit the underside of the bar and dropped down to the goal line ...
... The last time Christophe Larue played it was for the 3rd XI where he single-handedly decimated the opposition defence . Tonight he starts where he left off back then.
He's first to react to the rebound and like a flash he's into the goalmouth. With the defenders standing around watching he gets to the ball first and tucks it home to give Pionsat an early lead.
And Pionsat are still on the attack as you might expect, and Artonne need to defend. They eventually manage to get the ball away for a corner.
The ball is played in hard and one of the Pionsat players gets onto the end of it. He hits it diagonally across the goal towards the far corner but it's hooked off the line by an Artonne defender right at the last moment. You can see how hard it was hit by how much "air" the ball got. Artonne had a lucky escape there.
It's all Pionsat right now and one of the Pionsat forwards goes on a beautiful breakaway right down the right wing - a really beautiful move.
He puts the ball right over the top of the defence even wider out and the winger chases after it, brings it under control and goes right down the line to the touchline. He squares the ball into the centre for Cedric who has also beaten the offside trap and with a one-touch shot Cedric loops it up over the keeper (who is once more off his line for no good reason, I have to say) and into the net.
This is superb stuff.
Artonne haven't had a look-in for quite a while and it's all Pionsat as the game wears on. They try once again to play the offside trap and this time it is Christophe's turn to beat it comfortably.
He works his way nicely into the area too and beats the keeper with a fierce shot but the ball hits the inside of the post and bounces right across the goal and away to safety, with no-one at all following up. Pionsat were unlucky not to have a third.
And now it's the referee's turn to enter centre-stage with what seems to me to be a rather bizarre decision. The no14 who has not long been on the field and who has already been booked, sets off to break down the field and is blocked by an Artonne defender so there is a collision. It doesn't seem to be anything of importance or of any significance and both players remain on their feet yet the referee stops the game, shows the no14 a second yellow card and sends him off.
There must be more to this incident than I saw because this looked like something and nothing to me - certainly nothing like a foul by the no14 to me from where I was standing.
A few minutes later the referee shows a yellow card to an Artonne player for a foul; but to me this looked nothing any more or any less than anything else that had been going on during the match and I don't recall the player committing a significant number of fouls that might have led to a "persistent infringement".
Well, what an anti-climax this match was! Here I was looking for blood and thunder and it petered out into a damp squib. There was certainly nothing at all that might have led to another internet forum outrage. What a disappointment!
