3rd XI v AS MONTFERMY 5th DECEMBER 2009

The weather is starting to change now and so it's not much fun having to crawl out of my house at 20:00 to be on a windswept football stadium to watch a football match. But at least I'm well wrapped up with several layers of clothes. You have to feel sorry for the players out there dressed in next-to-nothing on a night like this.

I started on the subject of clothing because Jerome, who is I suppose the player-manager of the 3rd XI, was telling me just before kick-off that whenever he puts on a new pair of socks he always seems to score a goal. And badger me if he doesn't do just that.

It was a good move down the wing from Pionsat and the little no11 whose play down the left wing I happen to like got the ball and sure enough off down the left wing he went. He put in a good high cross that all of the defenders missed and it fell kindly for Jerome running on down the inside-right position and he whacked it back across goal and across the keeper right into the net.

Good old Jerome!

And utterly totally and completely against the run of play Montfermy score an equaliser. They win a free kick down the centre of the field and as the ball comes into the area Damian in goal shouts to his defenders for the ball.

The defence leave the ball to Damian and he rises up and takes it - but then inexplicably drops it right at the feet of one of the Montfermy players who just pushes it into the net. He won't score an easier goal than that. It was the first thing that Damian had had to do so far this evening too. He'll be disappointed with that.

There's some more good play again by Pionsat and by Christophe in particular. He's fouled on the edge of the penalty area but everyone plays the advantage and the ball goes to the no14 who has just come on as a substitute. He takes the ball on but some desperate defending by Montfermy run the ball out for a corner.

The corner is taken by the no14 who puts a really good ball into the penalty area. One of the Montfermy defenders rises up and heads the ball clear and Jerome is the first to react. He unleashes a shot that only just goes wide.

But have a look at this pic. I count seven Montfermy players, but where are the Pionsat attackers? There's not a one that's in the shot. There should be at least three or four up with the last line of defence putting some pressure on the goalkeeper. They aren't ever going to score if they can't get up to the goal in a dead-ball situation.

This no14 who has just come on is impressing me somewhat. It's clearly a while since he's played as he is .... errr .... let's just say "older than most of the others" and he's certainly not match-fit, but he's showing some skills that seem to indicate that he has played regularly in the past. He looks quite impressive at this level of football and if he decides to improve his fitness and play regularly he could be quite an asset to the 3rd XI.

And while I was dictating he gets himself into a shooting position but his shot is blocked by one of the Montfermy defenders, who receives the ball in the ... errr... abdominal region.

And that was really the story of the match. Montfermy offered nothing at all, Damian had nothing to do except that free kick, Pionsat had a full team out plus a couple of substitutes, the defence didn't put a foot wrong which totally astonished me (they've clearly been reading my notes) and all the action, such as it was, was at the Montfermy end of the pitch.

Montfermy were 6th in the table before the match, Pionsat 2nd from bottom and you could be forgiven for thinking that the positions should have been reversed. On the balance of play Pionsat ought to have thoroughly demolished this side and this is what they need to do to teams like this if they are to haul themselves away from the foot of the table.
