1st XI v RIOM - CUP MATCH 17th OCTOBER 2009
Having been ... errrrr ... somewhat misinformed about the time of the kick-off of this match, I turned up at 20:20 for the 20:30 kick-off just in time to see Riom break down the left wing, put a good cross into the Pionsat penalty area and a good side-foot tap into the net.
And as I walked into the ground I saw a good cross from the Pionsat left wing, a Pionsat forward rise unmarked to meet the ball and head against the crossbar and the ball to rebound back into play for another Pionsat player to tap into the net.
It also turned out that I had also missed a penalty. Unfortuately for Pionsat Riom hadn't missed it and as a result the score was already 2-1 for Riom before I'd even got my camera out. Not the best of starts, it has to be said, for me or for Pionsat.
Riom have all the air of being a big physical team. They are one division above Pionsat in the Puy-de-Dome league and they look it. They have a burst down the middle and a forward lets off a shot that Matthieu does well to get down to. He hangs onto it as well, which is just as well with a couple of Riom attackers hovering.
Yes, Matthieu is in goal tonight. I wonder what has happened to François.
Riom win a free kick and there is a lovely ball that is put out wide to the winger. The Pionsat full-back manages to get his head in the way of the cross but only succeeds in heading it back into the centre field. It lands at the feet of a Riom attacker who got in a quick shot on goal.
Matthieu had to be awake for that and Pionsat were very nearly their own worst enemies again there.
The next move nearly brought an equaliser for Pionsat. It was a good Pionsat attack and the ball ended up free on goal but a Riom player just about got to it first and kicked it out for a corner.
The kick came in and a Pionsat player got up well to the ball, totally unmarked. I thought we wree going to have a repeat of the goal earlier but somehow he put it wide. Only just, it has to be said, but a miss is as good as a mile.
Pionsat aren't out of the game by any means and they have the Riom defence under a sustained spell of pressure. There's a lovely flowing movement down the left wing that ends with a good cross right across the pitch to the right winger.
He cuts inside but is confronted by two Riom defenders. He takes them both on and beats them comfortably, and then gets in a shot that goes right across the goal but goes just wide.
But never mind the shot - look at the Pionsat no11 in acres of space without a defender in sight. Had the ball been pulled back to him it would have been a simple task to sidefoot into the net for the equaliser.
And talking of simple goals, we have a most astonishing incident that I completely missed. Riom's winger drove the ball in from a very narrow angle, Matthieu got to it and palmed it across goal (not a particularly advisable move, but there you are) and the ball is knocked back into the area to a Riom attacker, totally unmarked and with no-one else around at all.
He blasts the ball from no more than two yards out - and hits the bar! It was an even more glaring miss that the legendary Ronnie Rosenthal "goal that never was". Totslly inexplicable.
Then there was another Riom break down the right wing to beat the Pionsat offside trap. The linesman was in a good position and waved "play on" to the referee. The ball is crossed into the penalty area and driven in on goal from point-blank range.
Matthieu gets behind it and blocks the shot, but the ball rebounds free to another Riom attacker. He's unmarked and about six yards out and decides to go for glory. He puts everything he has into the shot and blasts it miles wide of the post. Pionsat breathe again.
I was rather miffed about getting the time of the match wrong and missing all of the goals - I was definitely told 20:30 but it was changed at the last minute.
From what I saw, Pionsat kept up with the game against a team 1 division higher and had their chances to score an equaliser, just as Riom had their chances to put the match beyond doubt. So I suppose justice was done in the end. I think that that is it for the cup now, and my gallivanting days will be over for this season.
