1st XI v ST GERVAIS 7th MARCH 2009
So having put part one of our footfest out of the way, we now have part two - the 1st XI against hated local rivals St Gervais. And as this is a Division 1 match we have a neutral referee appointed by the league.
The match starts with a lucky let-off for Pionsat as St Gervais win a corner. A really good delivery goes right over the top of the penalty area and is put out for a corner on the other side.
A St Gervais player, a big lad too, almost got his head on it. It's no wonder that he clutches his head in disbelief.
And we have a moment of high drama down the left touchline. Pionsat are in a good position to attack but one of the players loses the ball. He runs after the player with the ball and trips him from behind with no effort to play the ball.
It's a fair cop. A deliberate foul and a clear booking. The player should never have done that.
I've heard it said (and I'm sure you have too, although I've never seen anything official and in writing) that some referees like to even things up and if they have booked a player from one side then they look for a reason to book a player from the other side. But there was no suggestion of that with this one.
There had been a bit of a tussle between two players earlier in the game with the Pionsat player coming off the better. The next time they met up, the St Gervais player exacted his revenge with some force. Some referees faced with an incident of that nature would have quite easily issued a red card without a moment's hesitation
Meanwhile, back with the real action, Pionsat concede a free kick just outside the penalty area. The players line up a wall to protect the goal.
But nevertheless, despite the existence of the wall, the St Gervais player swerves it round nicely and puts the Pionsat keeper under some pressure. But he's equal to the task and hangs on tightly.
30 seconds later St Gervais are given the opportunity to take the lead. A tackle in the penalty area was adjudged to be a foul and a penalty is duly awarded. I was admittedly about 50 yards away and in the dark, but I couldn't see what it was that upset the referee.
No point in arguing and the St Gervais takes the kick and puts it wide of the despairing dive of the Pionsat keeper for 1-0.
It's just like the away match earlier in the season. Pionsat hanging on against some sustained pressure but finally cracking near the end of the match.
St Gervais are still piling the pressure onto the Pionsat defence as they look to wrap up the game. There's some good play down the left wing and a really good cross into the penalty area.
One of the St Gervais forwards is clean through as you can see and only has the keeper to beat, but he puts his shot wide and out for a goal kick. Pionsat have had yet another lucky let-off.
It's Pionsat's turn to finally get on the attack. There's some sustained pressure on the St Gervais defence and the Pionsat forwards work the ball down to the touchline to the left of goal.
They pull the ball back into the centre but it goes behind the Pionsat forward who had the goal at his mercy. If it had been to his feet he surely must have scored. Instead, the ball is cleared by the defence before another Pionsat attacker could get to it.
Well, that was that really. Another defeat for the 1st XI although Bernard and Michel are sure that the team will retain its 1st Division status. And indeed I've seen one or two teams in this division that have less to offer than Pionsat so they are probably right.
