1st XI v ST ANGEL 08 NOVEMBER 2008

St Angel are bottom of the league, so I was told. But knowing Pionsat's luck, anything might happen. But after the match last week at Montjoie, they were due for some good luck.

Despite the poor weather that we had been having, which caused the 2nd XI match against Artonne to be postponed earlier, I was looking forward to the match.

It didn't take long for the action to get under way. Pionsat were on the attack and won a corner. A good cross went in but a more-or-less free header went sailing over the bar by some distance.

The St Angel player wearing the number 14 shorts (and the number 4 shirt, by the way) quite impressed me. He (like much of the rest of his team) looked out of his depth at this level, but he was quick, efficient, read the game well, and generally did much of his team's prompting.

Another shot from distance shortly later had the St Angel keeper in something of a scramble. He'd been caught a bit too far off his line and someone had tried a chip over his head.

As it happened, the ball was a little high and a little wide, and didn't really cause him that much trouble, but it was a good effort all the same. You can't score a goal if you don't have a shot.

Another corner, and another free header. And the Pionsat player on the left edge of the photo put some power into this one. Bit once again, the ball went wide of the upright.

You might be wondering why it is that all the action takes place at the St Angel end of the game. That's because there was nothing going on at the other. St Angel were pretty woeful in attack and didn't offer anything at all. In fact, I don't remember the Pionsat goalkeeper touching the ball in earnest.

And talking of the Pionsat keeper, he must have read what I wrote last week at the Nord Combraille match. He was wearing a flourescent orange sweater.

And talking of what I wrote last week, although St Angel didn't have much to offer throughout the game, Pionsat's attack wasn't all that much better. They had the centre-forward from last week, but he has a tendency to fade in and out of the game. If they had had the nos12 and 13 from last week as well, and played like they played in the last 20 minutes of that game, they would have torn St Angel to shreds

I was beginning to wonder when it might be that Pionsat might open the scoring, and I suspected that it might come from a set piece such as a corner or a free kick. I didn;t expect it to come from open play.

In fact it came from a corner, and followed a goalmouth scramble. A bunch of players on the edge of the penalty area, a foot or two going in, the ball bobbing about everywhere, and then a Pionsat foot steers it into the net wide of the keeper and out of reach of the full backs on the posts.

I liked the ref too in this game. One or two of his decisions were ... er ... unusual, but he had an air of total professionalism, made himself an integral part of the game, and was quite clear in whatever it was that he was signalling. You don't need much more than that at this level.

And blow me down if Pionsat didn't come within an ace of scoring another goal. This shot was a good whack at the goal following a movement that had enticed the keeper out. It had "goal" written on it all the way, but a despairing boot from the St Angel left-back heaved it off the line.

I wasn't expecting another goal, as the match was slowly petering out in the wind that had sprung up. So this was a bonus.

And just when you think something like that, Pionsat go and score a second. And a goal that owed more to luck than anything else.

If you remember the goal that was scored against them last week when two of their players collided and the ball fell kindly for a Nord Combraille player, this was something similar. Two defenders had a neat interchange of passes and then one of them went to hoof it upfield. A Pionsat player charged the shot down, and for once it fell nicely for Pionsat. The advancing keeper was easily rounded and the Pionsat forward poked it into the net.

And that was that, really. St Angel were a poor side, but Pionsat will need to improve if they aren't to be dragged down into the basement. They played tonight without much ambition or fire. If only they could play every week like they played last week.
